Whitney Cain LCMHC PHD
As an undergraduate at The University of the South, my love of psychology nestled right beside my interests in literature and story. My Masters program at Boston University added an appreciation of the sociocultural influences in our lives to my interests. In earning my PhD in Developmental Psychology at North Carolina State University, I integrated these areas by exploring how our unique life events and shared sociocultural influences weave to shape our personal narratives.
From graduate school I headed into academia where my research and teaching echoed the themes of narrative and social influences, and, especially, how we understand ourselves through them. After 18 years of teaching in the college classroom, it was time for me to take a look at my own unique life and living. This led me to become a student again at North Carolina Central University where I earned an M.A. in Clinical Mental Health Counseling.
I live with my husband of twenty-two years and our three teenagers. The family photo on this page is an old one, but it’s also a favorite. We enjoy exploring the Triangle, spending time with friends, and cooking up various concoctions in the kitchen. I am completely devoted to my twice-weekly boot camp; not because I like to exercise, but because of the dear friends who make me go. I also love reading, travel, learning, and coffee. I might try paddle-boarding one day, but right now I just like to think about it.
Should you need help negotiating your own transitions, I welcome the opportunity to work together. Please contact me to talk about what we might be able to do together. To learn about my thinking on life and living, check out my “currently on-sabbatical” blog.
